The colors morello and rosaceo: the correct choice in Advent time

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal highlights how "The purpose of a variety in the color of the sacred vestments is to give effective expression even outwardly to the specific character of the mysteries of faith being celebrated and to a sense of Christian life’s passage through the course of the liturgical year." (GIRM 345).

The usual liturgical colors, in time of Advent, are joined by black and pink, colors of penance and anticipation of the joy of the Nativity.

It is necessary to distinguish between viola and morello, just as it is necessary to be aware that Advent and Lent are substantially different liturgical paths. Morello, in fact, represents a lighter and brighter shade that reflects the sense of expectation for the birth of the Lord, a glorious event. Purple, a darker color, symbolizes the period of Lent.

The pink color can be used during the celebrations of Gaudete Sunday (the third Sunday of the season of Advent) and Laetare Sunday (the fourth Sunday of the season of Lent). These Sundays are in fact considered a brief stop on the journey of penance and waiting: they are Sundays characterized by joy, they are Sundays in which the Liturgy invites us to a happy and joyful Christian witness. And it is thus that the pink color is symbolically placed halfway between violet, a symbol of penance, and white, a symbol of holiday celebrations.
